Pain - NSAIDS or Essential Oils?

A lot of people ask me what oils should they use for pain?  Well, that depends on what kind of pain you are talking about.  At the end of this blog is a very short list of some different types of pain and which oil to use.

Facts:
- About half of the world's population suffers from headaches.
- At least 1 out of every 4 Americans have experienced chronic pain.
- At least half of Americans who are 65 or older suffer from pain every day.
- NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) are found in Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Advil, and Motrin.

I saw a video (below) about some astonishing facts about NSAIDS.
- Tylenol kills 7 people a month
- Toxic effects from NSAIDS and Acetaminophen is the 7th/8th most common cause of death.
- Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Excedrin, Panadol, Paracetamol) poisoning is the main cause of liver failure.
- There are over 100,000 Poison Control Center calls for Acetaminophen poisoning.
- There are over 600 OTC medications and prescriptions with Acetaminophen.

What oils to use for different types of pain:
- For tooth and gum pain, use clove oil.
- For muscular and skeletal pain, use balsam fir oil.
- For headaches, stomach pain, fever, bruises, pulled muscles, and inflammation, use peppermint oil.
- For wounds (scrapes, cuts), rashes, bruises, and pain caused by stress, use lavender oil.
- For muskoskeletal pain, arthritic/rheumatic pain, and joint pain, use wintergreen oil.
- For muscle pain, use marjoram oil.
- For tennis elbow, arthritis, and sore muscles, use PanAway oil - a blend of wintergreen, peppermint, helichrysum, and clove.

Many oils have cortisol-like properties like spruce.  Did you know that wintergreen is the precursor for aspirin?  It has at least 85% methyl salicylate (which is found in aspirin).  Neosporin will speed healing while reducing infection rates and scaring. However, Neosporin causes skin allergies on up to 20% of those who use it repeatedly.

The BEST thing about these oils is that they don't have side effects!

Pure Essential Oils

Does it really matter if an oil is pure or not?  Pure, meaning undiluted.  Buyer Beware!

Have you ever wondered where all of the essential oils come from that are in our personal care products?  If it is truly pure, wouldn't we run out of farmland to grow the plants?  Have you ever wondered why France exports more lavender than it produces?  It's because they dilute the oil, making it not pure.  What about all of the claims that the lavender in your soap or air freshener will relax you?  Does it really?  How could it?  Is the soap or air freshener toxic to begin with?  If the oils are really pure then why would manufacturer's combine toxic ingredients with non-toxic ingredients?  Is that an oxymoron?  Ask your massage therapist the next time you go for a massage to find out what the ingredients are in the oils that they use.

Just remember that you shouldn't put things on your skin that you aren't willing to eat.

Grade A (also called therapeutic grade) oils are lipid (oil) soluble and are volatile, and aromatic compounds.  They are steam distilled and cold pressed over long times.  The essential oils are from every part of the plant except for the seeds.  The more heat and the faster the plants are processed, the more the plants lose the qualities of the essential oils.

Why shouldn't I buy essential oils in retail stores?  Because less than pure essential oils may do more harm to you.  Why don't the essential oils work like it says?  What you find in most stores (including Whole Foods) are oils that you can't ingest.  Why is that?  It's because the quality of the oils are less than Grade A.  They are toxic and diluted.  They want to maximize profits.

An analogy is wine.  Why are wines prized based upon the year they are made?  That's because the growing season has different components each year like soil, wind, sun, rain, temperature, and altitude.  Same goes for the plants that are grown to produce the essential oils.  Each harvest is different.  If a manufacturer of essential oils wants to make it smell and taste the same year after year, they would have to alter the compounds.  Thereby destroying the therapeutic benefits of the essential oil.

It is up to you, as the consumer, to be educated about essential oils.  You want to maximize the dollar spent on the value that the essential oils give you.

Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has only Grade A (therapeutic grade) oils which are GRAS approved by the FDA.

Exercise and Nutrition

Here are some notes on exercise that were taken at the 2006 Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) Convention:

The body must move.  The athlete’s body goes fast.  They need to recover from the acids the muscles produce rapidly.  This is not necessarily healthy.  It is better to exercise regularly and moderately.  The goals differ for both types of exercisers.  The athlete does intense exercise for medals and has one or two activities for training such as running, boxing, weight training.  The regular exerciser will do moderate activity for fitness and does a variety such as walking, biking, stair climbing, swimming, tennis, resistance and weight bearing, etc.  Exercise is stress on the body which is good.  The body will adapt and we need just enough.  Too much puts too great a stress on the body and this stress needs to be overcome by rest, hydration and good nutrition.

We need to know the goals of our fitness customers in order to best help them.  Are they regular exercisers or athletes?

Certain activities require certain products best suited for them.  For endurance, do aerobic exercises.  Intense exercise is not healthy.  You should be able to hold a conversation while you exercise.  That is an indicator or a good pace.  Strength exercisers such as body builders and aerobic exercisers have different recovery times.  The aerobic exerciser who walks or runs burns fat and needs a recovery drink with a ratio of 60% carbs, 20% protein and 20% fat.  Whey Fit (now Pure Protein Complete) drink is ideal for this exerciser.  The anaerobic exerciser such as a weight lifter needs a 50% carb, 25% protein and 35% fat drink.  Power Meal is ideal for this exerciser.  The protein in Power Meal is vegetarian.

Exercise makes the body acidic.  Fruits and vegetables are alkaline.  The desired state of the body is alkaline and disease favors an acidic body.  Athletes should not eat 2 hours before a competition.  Enjoy a healthy meal after.  A good recipe for an after exercise recovery shake is one scoop Young Living Whey Fit (now Pure Protein Complete), one banana, one half teaspoon Blue Agave (which is a honey like substance from a cactus plant and does not raise blood sugar levels), two tablespoons ground flax seeds and a handful of NingXia wolfberries

Young Living products are designed to help athletes of all kinds to recover quicker and give better performances.  After workouts, the immune system is low and athletes need a healthy recovery snack such as a nutritional shake.  It takes the body two hours to recover from white sugar ingestion.  Coffee exhausts the adrenal gland.  Many athletes have a chronic cough because intense exercise depletes the lung moisture.  Good nutrition is vital.

Use glass bottles to put oils in to drink.  Plastic is not good.  For athletes’ good performance, put oils such as Valor and En-R-gee on hairline, Gathering on ankle and foot, Harmony on edge of eyebrow (balances energy) and put oils on your meridian points.  Rub Mountain Savory and Nutmeg with two fingers on the crease of the adrenal gland to stimulate it.  Relieve It is a good massage oil for after and Aroma Siez is good for aching muscles.

Enjoy your exercise!

Toxic Mold

- More than 50% of homes have mold resulting in a 50-100% increase in respiratory problems (according to studies performed by Harvard University and Johns Hopkins University).
- It is estimated that 45 million Americans suffer from allergies.
- Over 50% of patients tested in one allergy clinic who had allergy symptoms tested positive for the mold species Cladosporium.
- According to a Mayo Clinic study, 1 in 7 Americans suffers from acute fungal sinusitis.

Everyone can be affected by black mold.  Many common ailments can be attributed to the harmful effects of mold such as: allergies, asthma, breathing difficulties, colds, chronic sinusitis, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, runny nose, and sore throat.  We spend billions of dollars every year on over-the-counter medications, doctors, and prescriptions to treat the symptoms of these illnesses.

Cellulose is a primary food source for mold and can be found in wood, cotton, paper, hemp, etc.  One square inch of mold infestation can produce over a million spores that are released into the air.  What many people do not realize is that mold is probably growing in their homes and workspace right now.  There may be super-colonies of mold in duct work or central heating and air conditioning systems, basements, attics, crawl spaces, under floors, and behind walls.

Why can't I just use bleach?
1.  Sodium hypochlorite is the active ingredient and is a deadly gas that has killed thousands of soldiers.
2.  If bleach is accidentally mixed with an acid-containing cleaner (such as toilet-bowl cleaners, drain cleaners, lemon juice or vinegar), a deadly chlorine gas is released.
3.  Household bleach contains 3-6% sodium hypochlorite and the remaining is water.  Using bleach provides 1 of 3 ingredients necessary for mold growth.
4.  Bleach kills mold on nonporous surfaces, not in the air or on porous surfaces such as: wood, wallpaper, sheet rock, and grout.  Sodium hypochlorite dissipates within a few hours of application and the mold growth rebounds.

For years, mold was treated with bleach or ozone air cleaners.  Now, we are discouraged from using these because they are toxic and not effective.  An all-natural, organic substance like Thieves Household Cleaner or Thieves essential oil blend is a great option from Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO).  Thieves is a blend of cinnamon bark, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, and rosemary.  Micro-organisms are not able to adapt to essential oils as long as they remain pure and unadulterated.

You can clean the mold area with undiluted Thieves Household Cleaner and diffuse the Thieves essential oil for 15 minutes every 3 hours.

Hidden Hazards of Air Fresheners

How toxic are your air fresheners? Do you think they actually freshen your air? Well, from watching television commercials, you would think that they are made out of flowers and do freshen your air -- as if you had placed fresh cut flowers all round your house. However, most air fresheners actually have the opposite effect and make your home's indoor air more polluted!

Our homes today already typically have very poor air quality due to many chemicals that are now found in our cleaning products, home building materials like paints, carpets and cabinets, and home furnishings like mattresses, couches and more. In fact, your home may be more polluted than it is outside. So do you really want to make your indoor air quality even worse with so-called air fresheners??
They can release air-polluting chemicals that can actually make you sick. When people use air
fresheners, the phthalates are released into the air where they may be inhaled or may land on the
skin and be absorbed. Once these chemicals enter the bloodstream, they can alter hormone levels and cause other health problems. The important thing to remember is you don't want to cover up odors with chemicals and perfumes. Get rid of them - the green way.

Did you know?
  • Air fresheners almost never “freshen” the air. They just mask odors, either with synthetic fragrance or by interfering with your ability to smell by coating your nasal passages with an undetectable oily film or releasing a nerve-deadening agent. In rare cases, they will actually break down the offensive odor.  Did you know that people who use a lot of toxic hair products have less of a sense of smell? It kills your ability to smell by way of a nerve-deadening chemical.
  • Known toxic chemicals that can be found in air fresheners include camphor, phenol, ethanol, formaldehyde, benzene, volatile organic compounds, and artificial fragrances can cause symptoms like headaches, rashes, dizziness, migraines, asthma attacks, mental confusion, coughing and more. Some of the substances in air fresheners are linked to cancer or hormone disruption.
  • A study published on July 10, 2010, in Environmental Health found that women who used more household cleaning products, including air fresheners and mold removers, had a 2x higher risk of breast cancer.
  • Many aerosol air fresheners contain toxic phthalates, which have been linked to birth defects and reproductive harm.  Other conditions include cancer, neurological damage, developmental disorders, headache, anaphylaxis, respiratory distress, dizziness, lung irritation, fatigue, confusion, and nausea irritated eyes, nose, throat.

Some alternatives:
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Soy candles
- Open the windows
- Essential oils
- Spices
- Non-toxic alternatives

Diffusing

History of Diffusing

The term "aromatherapy" was coined by the French chemist René-Maurice Gattefossé in the early 1920s. Gattefossé spent his life devoted to essential oils and their healing properties. However, for more than 6,000 years prior to Gattefossé, aromatherapy had been used by the Egyptians, Romans, and the Greeks. Imhotep, an Egyptian physician, suggested that oils be used for massage, bathing, and embalming the dead. Hippocrates, known as the father of modern medicine, used aromatic smoke and vapors to purge Athens of the plague.

Today, much has been theorized regarding the effects of diffusing essential oils, which can be considered similar to the aromatic smoke used by Hippocrates. It has been hypothesized that when essential oils are diffused, they can increase atmospheric oxygen by releasing oxygenating molecules into the air. Not only can essential oils increase oxygen in the atmosphere, they also increase the body’s ability to transport oxygen into the cells. The lipid-soluble structure of essential oils allows them to easily penetrate the cell membranes of the nose and enter into the bloodstream. Once in the bloodstream, the oils can help transport oxygen and nutrients into the cells.

Primary Benefits+ Transform your surroundings: Create a relaxing, spa-like atmosphere or instantly brighten the mood of your home or office.

MRSA

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus) is a monster bacteria created by the medical use of man-made antibiotics and antibacterial agents employed principally in hospitals. It was first detected in the 1960s, only a few years after a new semi-synthetic form of penicillin (Methicillin) was introduced. Hospitals are where this germ originated and is still where it is principally found.

“MRSA is spread by contact. So you could get MRSA by touching another person who has it on the skin. Or you could get it by touching objects that have the bacteria on them. MRSA is carried, or “colonized,” by about 1% of the population, although most of them aren’t infected. Staph (MRSA) can be a problem if it manages to get into the body, often through a cut. Once there, it can cause an infection. Staph is one of the most common causes of skin infections in the U.S.” source: webmd.com

MRSA Facts

- MRSA is a resistant form of Staphylococcus aureus that can live on the skin and cause skin infections
- Community Acquired MRSA (CA-MRSA) can progress from first symptom to death in as few as 3 days
- Intact skin is the body’s natural defense against infection.
- Any abrasion or break in the skin creates a potential portal of entry
- Abraded skin under a knee pad may create a portal of entry for infection. Knee pads do not protect against infection, and they may, in fact, be carriers of bacteria that can cause infection.
- CA-MRSA has many treatment options and is very treatable, with many options, if diagnosed in the early stages
- MRSA is most commonly misdiagnosed as a spider bite, impetigo or as a harmless pimple. Look for disproportionately greater pain compared to the size of the affected area to help differentiate MRSA from lesser concerns. Another important thing to consider is that spider bites are extremely rare. You are more likely to be struck by lightning than to be bitten by a spider. Informed health care professionals in high risk environments often treat “spider bites” as MRSA if a dead (brown recluse) spider cannot be produced.
- Always consult a health care professional immediately if MRSA is suspected
Source: http://www.nwcaonline.com/hibiclens_wrestlingspecific.pdf

Some interesting statistics:
    - In 1969 the U.S. surgeon general proclaimed “the war on infectious diseases has been won.”
    - In 1974 just 2% of the most common form of staph infections found in hospitals were resistant to the common antibiotic methicillin. Today more than 60% are impervious to it.
    - This year nearly 2 million Americans will get bacterial infections while in a hospital. 90,000 of them will die.
    - Current estimates place the annual cost of treating drug-resistant infections at more than $10 billion.
    - As ultraresistant strains continue to rise, so will demand—both for treatments and for new ways of preventing the spread of bacteria before it takes root in a person’s body.

Medical science has no effective treatment for MRSA infections.

Since Modern Medicine has no cure for MRSA and is, in fact, the cause of MRSA, the most likely means to combat MRSA is essential oils, which are among the most versatile and effective antimicrobial agents known. Not only do essential oils have powerful antibacterial properties without side effects, they are also incapable of producing resistant strains of bacteria as synthetic pharmaceuticals do.

Thieves Therapeutic Oil Blend Kills Bacteria!
Theives Oil had already been scientifically tested at Weber State University, Ogden, Utah, and found to have a 99.996% kill rate against all airborne bacteria.

In November 2006,the University of Manchester published findings from their extensive research on the action of essential oils on the hospital super bug MRSA. In every case study it was found that the essential oils used in Thieves Oil destroyed MRSA 100%.

Seventy-eight of the 91 single oils tested showed measurable inhibitory activity against MRSA. The top ranking oils, in descending order of effectiveness, were Lemongrass (Cymbopogen flexuosus), Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora), Mountain Savory (Satureja montana), Cinnamon Bark (Cinnamomum verum), and Melissa (Melissa officinalis). The most effective single oil, Lemongrass, completely inhibited all MRSA growth on the test plate.

Of the 64 YL blends tested, 52 showed zones of inhibition, while 12 showed no detectable inhibitory activity against MRSA.  These blends: R.C.™, Motivation™, and Longevity™ have the highest level of inhibition.  Melrose and Thieves were also on the top of the list.

There are two reasons essential oils do not and cannot create resistant strains of bacteria:
(1) Essential oils are extremely complex, comprised of hundreds of compounds, while laboratory-produced medicines are simple, usually consisting of only one or two active ingredients. Thus, bacteria have less difficulty in breaking the codes of a man-made medicine than in attempting to form a resistance to a natural medicine like an essential oil.
(2) Furthermore, essential oils are never twice the same while every batch of a pharmaceutical drug is always the same, reproduced with laboratory exactness. Hence, with repeated exposure to the same identical drug, bacteria eventually figure out its toxic properties and develope resistance. However, since essential oils are never identical from year to year, even if bacteria did figure out an oil’s effective components in a given year, they would have to start all over with the next crop.

The reason essential oils are not exactly duplicatible is because the growing environment for a plant is never the same year to year. Some years are warmer than others, some cooler, some with more rain, some less, and if you compare the same species grown in different latitudes, altitudes, climates, and soils, you get even greater variations.

Therefore bacteria will never figure out nor become resistant to an essential oil because they are too complex and because they are always changing. Man-made medicines are temporary, but God’s medicines are forever.

The reason essential oils are so effective is because they are made up of a complex mixture of chemical compounds which the MRSA and other super bug bacteria finds difficult to resist. The problem with current treatments is that they are made of single compounds which MRSA relatively quickly becomes resistant to, so treatment is only successful in around 50% of cases.  Plus, these are could cause skin irritation.  MRSA is often carried in side the nose and patient often have to insert treatments up their nostrils.  Wouldn't it be nice to just smell an essential oil instead?

Mosquito Repellent

How many of you cringe at the thought of putting mosquito repellent all over your body?  It definitely works, but have you stopped and thought of what your skin is absorbing into your bloodstream?  Ew is right.

DEET is a member of the toluene chemical family which is a common solvent that is used in rubber and plastic cements and also paint removers. It is absorbed through the skin and then into the bloodstream and intestinal tract.

People do get skin irritations and rashes from it.  Other side effects include damage to brain cells, a negative effect on the central nervous system, loss of memory, headaches, fatigue, respiratory problems and more.  It is not safe for babies less than 2 months old.  The use of DEET on children can be even more dangerous because their nervous systems are still developing.  If you have to use DEET on small children, use a small percentage of DEET in the repellent.  Make sure that you wash it off (no pun intended) as soon as you will be indoors.

Did you know that DEET was developed by the US Army for use in jungle warfare?

Did you know that when you apply sunscreen and DEET that the DEET makes the sunscreen less effective?

What essential oils can we use for mosquito repellent?
Purification, Palo Santo oil, lemon eucalyptus, lemongrass, citronella, palmarosa, cedar, geranium and others.  Since the essential oils are of a high concentration, they must be diluted before applying them directly to the skin.

Purification is a Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) blend of therapeutic grade essential oils, no carrier oils added. It is a blend of Citronella, Lemongrass, Lavandin, Rosemary, Melaleuca alternifolia and Myrtle. The Purification blend cleanses the air and neutralizes odors when diffused. It disinfects and cleanses cuts and scrapes and alleviates itching and redness from insect bites including spiders, bees, hornets and wasps. The sooner you can apply Purification to a bite the smaller the reaction will be. The essential oils draw out the sting toxins and keep them from spreading through the body. In the case of an allergic reaction to a sting, apply Purification neat (without diluting) to the site of sting every 10 minutes while you are on the way to seek medical attention.

Fibromyalgia and Ningxia Red

Fibromyalgia is an autoimmune disorder of the soft tissue.  It is an inflammatory condition where your body is in pain, especially after exercise.  The fourth stage of sleep is not attained and fatigue sets in.

Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a product called NingXia Red is high on the ORAC scale (measures antioxidant levels). It is anti-inflammatory and can relieve some pain with people who have fibromyalgia or arthritis. Fibromyalgia is an acidic condition in which the liver is toxic. Limonene is found in citrus oils and helps with detoxifying the liver.

Ningxia Red is a fusion drink with the following ingredients:
Whole Ningxia wolfberry (lyceum barbarum) puree
Blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) juice
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) juice
Apricot (Prunus armeniaca) juice
Raspberry (Rubus idaeus) juice
Organic blue agave (A. tequilana) nectar
Grape (Vitis vinifera) seed, skin, and stem
Lemon (Citrus limon) rind
Orange (Citrus sinensis) rind

Dry Skin

So many people have asked me what to do about dry skin.  Below is the info I shared with them.

Here's an article about the 11 Causes of Dry Skin:  http://www.webmd.com/healthy-beauty/features/dry-skin-causes

Eczema is hard to treat. It starts from the inside out and that the lotions and soaps that you put on won't be enough. When someone has eczema, they are very acidic.  It is recommended that you buy a PH test strip (you just pee on it) at the pharmacy and see what the numbers are.  You need to minimize the amount of fast foods and processed foods that you eat and to take enzymes - morning, noon and night.  Take Alkalime to alkanize your body (after confirming from the PH Test strip that you are acidic).

Where do I Begin?

I wanted to write something addressing some of the most common asked questions I received, the most prevalent of which is "Where do I begin?".

To begin, you need to ask yourself some simple questions like:
- How is my family's and my own health?
- Do I want to use more health conscious personal care products?
- Should I be using more non-toxic household cleaners?

Looking at how to make you and your home healthier with natural products is what Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) is all about. It is easy to start off small with a starter kit or by just using the nontoxic thieves cleaner. These will give you a great feel for what the whole line of young living can offer. If you love the smell of the oils, I can introduce you to a wonderful diffuser that will fill your house (or individual rooms) with a wonderful aroma and bacteria fighting scents of any oil you choose. There are also inexpensive lip balms that are available (a personal favorite of mine) as well as hand sanitizers and soaps from the Thieves line.

Here are some more questions I thought of that you could ask yourself and I would be happy to address for you:
- Do you get headaches a lot and don't like to take ibuprofen? If yes, peppermint could help with that.
- Do you get cuts, scrapes, burns, or bruises and want to use something natural? If yes, lavender could help with that.
- Do you have an upset stomach, heartburn or digestive problems? If yes, peppermint, digize, or alkalime could help with that.
- Do you have a need to use oils on your pet? YL has an animal scents line that would be great to use.
- Do you want your house to smell nice but do not want to use Glade Plug-Ins? If yes, any oil would be great. Especially, joy, lavender, thieves, or peace and calming along with a cold air diffuser.
- Do you smoke or have pets and want to get rid of the smell and not want to use Lysol or Febreeze? If yes, purification or thieves will help.
- Do you want to start trading out some of the toxic household cleaners for non-toxic ones? If yes, Thieves Household Cleaner would be great.
- Do you want to use a natural mosquito repellent instead of using deet? If yes, purification is a good choice.
- Do you want to build up your immune system during the cold and flu season? If yes, thieves, immupower, or Ningxia Red could help with that.
- Do you know of a child who could benefit from an organic line of personal care products? YL has a kids scents line that would be great to use.
- Do you get massages? Why not bring your own massage oils and reap the benefits of a therapeutic grade oil? Massage therapists don't mind using the oils that you bring in. You can either buy a pre-made massage oil that YL makes or you can create your own by mixing the oils that you want along with the V6 mixing oil.

Start with one or two things in mind and when you feel comfortable with that, then you can expand. Each oil has several uses. The top two oils that are very versatile are lavender and peppermint.

If you have a question about something specific (ailment or oil), I can look it up in the Essential Oils Desk Reference book and email you a snippet. I have a lot of brochures if you want anything specific. I have a blog and it can be found on my website. I have lots more to write about so, keep checking back.

Thank you for your time and I would love to hear back from you.

Are Hand Sanitizers Good or Bad?

  • - Only 17 percent of Americans wash their hands after shaking hands — yet 51 percent wash them after sneezing or coughing.

  • - Only 33 percent of those who do wash their hands use soap. And only 16 percent really wash their hands long enough.

  • - Every three minutes, a child brings his hand to his nose or mouth. Every 60 seconds, a working adult touches as many as 30 objects.

Hand sanitizers are good to use if there is no soap and water available to kill bacteria.  It has to contain at least 60% alcohol in order to do the job.  It might say ethyl alcohol, ethanol, isopropanol or some other variation, and those are all fine.  They are not to be used to wash off dirt, blood, oil, food, etc...  Alcohol is easily absorbed by the skin.  Denatured alcohol is ethanol that has additives in it making it toxic.

Hand sanitizers will dry out your hands unless it has a moisturizer added to it.  On the other hand, some say that the alcohol is better for your hands than plain soap.

If it says that it will kill 99% of the bacteria, the other 1% will mutate into a more resistant bacteria becoming less effective over time.  On the other hand, some say that is not the case with hand sanitizers.

Hand sanitizers either have alcohol, which is highly flammable, or triclosan in them.  Triclosan is known to be a pesticide and is not harmful to humans, but it hasn't been ruled out either.  Knowing this, kids are building up their immunities and don't necessarily need all of the bacteria off of them all the time.  Plus, they are more likely to stick their fingers in their mouth.

Hand sanitizers kill the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria.  Essential oils only kill the bad bacteria.  Hand sanitizers stop working once they evaporate (dry).

Interesting facts about the Thieves Hand Purifier from Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO):
    1.  It has denatured ethanol using peppermint essential oil (making it not as toxic).
    2.  After the ethanol evaporates, the Thieves essential oil blend still remains on the skin (allowing it to have antibacterial properties longer).
    3.  It contains aloe vera and vegetable glycerin (to moisturize the hands).

Antibacterial Hand Soap versus Essential Oils

Triclosan is the antibacterial agent found in antibacterial soaps and other personal care products. The EPA considers it a possible risk to human health and to the environment. Studies have shown that plain soap kills just as much bacteria as an antibacterial soap.  Antibacterial soaps could spawn resistant bacteria and contaminate ground water.

Antibiotics create super germs through evolution by the survival of the fittest.  The strongest or resistant bacteria survive to create a new generation of strong germs that are no longer affected by the antibiotic that helped create them.  In response, pharmaceutical companies develop more powerful antibiotics that can destroy the resistant strains.

Most hand soaps have antibacterial properties and contain harmful chemicals and fragrances. Essential oils affect the hostile bacteria and leave the friendly bacteria intact (which strengthens the immune system) while antibacterial soaps kill all bacteria, good and bad (which weakens the immune system).   Antibiotics have a specific chemical make up identical in every batch (easier for bacteria to build a resistance to).  Essential oils have a very complex structure with hundreds of constituents (soil, air, water, sun, etc) and are different in every batch.

    Thieves Overview

Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a product called Thieves, which is a blend of cinnamon bark, clove, eucalyptus, lemon, and rosemary.  What is the story behind the name?  During the 15th century plague, a bandit of four thieves doused themselves with oils to protect themselves while robbing the dead and the half dying.  They did not get sick.  When captured, they were offered a lighter sentence in exchange for their recipe.

Thieves enhances the immune system function, purifies the air, and kills surface bacteria.  It is anti-infectious, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-fungal, anti-septic, and anti-inflammatory.

When diffused, it can kill 99.96% of the microbes within 12 minutes.  Now, wouldn't you want to inhale something natural rather than using Lysol, Febreeze, or Glade Plug-Ins?

How can I use Thieves to help me maintain a healthy immune system?  You can put 1 or 2 drops on the bottom of your feet every morning and every evening.  Diffusing Thieves can kill the airborne bacteria.  Taking Inner Defense soft gels can boost up your immune system.

Young Living Essential Oils has the following products with the Thieves oil blend:  inner defense, household cleaner, wipes, spray, lozenges, toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, foaming hand soap, bar soap, and hand purifier (sanitizer).   Check out:  http://www.youngliving.us/pdfs/thieves_booklet.pdf

Check out this article on how to use Thieves:  http://www.secretofthieves.com/pdf/33WaysToUseThieves.pdf

Thieves is so powerful that it kills black mold.

Since there is a lot of research and information about the specific products, I will write other blogs with more detailed information.

    Stay healthy!!!!

How Can We Build Up Our Immune Systems?

    •             Eat healthy making sure that you intake less processed foods, white flour, and sugar while eating more organic and alkaline foods that are nutrient dense, especially those with vitamin C.   Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a product called Inner Defense which is a softgel that contains Thieves, oregano, thyme, and lemongrass which are great for immune support.

    •             When taking a multi-vitamin, make sure it says “whole food source”.  90% of a synthetic vitamin passes right through you and are a waste of money.  Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a multi-vitamin called True Source.

    •             Try not to eat irradiated or microwaved food because it kills the enzymes.  You want to eat live food.  Enzymes are the building blocks in our body as they remove toxic substances from our blood such as free radicals, they eliminate old fat and proteins that cause cardiovascular problems, they prevent allergies, degeneration, disease, and much more.  It could take up to 2 or 3 years to build up our enzyme reserves.  Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has an enzyme product called Essentialzyme.

    •             Restore the alkalinity in your body.  If you are sick, you are too acidic.  When this happens, extra mucus is created, which causes inflammation, which results in disease.  You can buy PH test strips at the pharmacy.  To get your body more alkaline, you can eat foods that are more on the alkaline side.  Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a product called Alkalime

    •             Free radicals come from sources outside your body, such as tobacco smoke, toxins, or pollutants, and can damage your body’s cells, proteins, and DNA by altering their chemical structure. They can cause aging and illness.  Eat foods that are high antioxidants.  Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a product called Ningxia Red.  It is a nutrient-infused wolfberry drink that has the highest levels of antioxidants on the ORAC scale to help support immune function, cardiovascular health, nourish the eyes, and promote healthy liver function.  All you need is one ounce a day to maintain your healthy immune system.

    •             Many of us do not realize that the bowel is the source of core health and vitality.  If the bowel is not working properly, optimal health is impossible and the body is vulnerable to numerous conditions.  Between 70 to 85 percent of the immune cells in our bodies are present in the gastrointestinal tract.  Most Americans 40 and over have between 3-15 pounds of impacted fecal matter they are carrying.    Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a cleansing trio kit which includes Essentialzyme, ComforTone, and ICP.

    •             By building bowel health, probiotics supports normal elimination, improves digestion, boosts immunity, and reduces yeast. Probiotics are sometimes known as healthy intestinal flora or beneficial bacteria, and are in fermented foods like yogurt and sauerkraut.  Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a probiotic product called Life 5.

    •             Raise your frequency.  A few of the things that lower frequency include: heavy, processed, and junk foods; negative words, thoughts, actions, and feelings; negative people and situations; artificial synthesized materials such as fluorescent lights, synthetic fabrics, synthetic foods, vitamins, and medicines; working at a job you hate; and mainstream radio, television, and newspapers - particularly the news.  The only way to keep the body vibrating high is to heal the past trauma, eliminate limiting beliefs and lead a healthy physical, mental, emotional and spiritual lifestyle.  Sickness begins when the frequency is lowered.  By using essential oils, which have high frequencies, we increase our own.  Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a vast array of essential oils that can do just that.

    •             Drink one-half your weight in ounces of water to flush out the toxins per day. If you don’t like drinking plain water, try adding one of the Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) citrus oils for flavor.

    •             Get plenty of rest.  The average adult should sleep 7-8 hours.  Sleep debt is the effect of not getting enough rest and sleep; a large debt causes mental, emotional and physical fatigue.   Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has a product called Sleep Essence as well as lavender and a blend called peace and calming to help you sleep.

    •             Reduce your stress.  Prolonged and chronic stress weakens the immune system.   If you learn to handle stress and relax, you will be much happier and healthier and you will function at a much higher level.  You can do this by learning to meditate, finding fun activities that help you to relax like walking or a massage, and by changing your thought patterns to alter your emotions and your behaviors.  Knowing how stress affects the immune system can be the key to becoming healthier and happier.  Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) has many essential oils in which you can diffuse that can help you meditate and relax.

    Weight Loss and Restored Vitality

At the Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) 2011 Convention, there were breakout sessions.  Below are my notes from one of them that was about weight loss and restored vitality.

In the 1970's, 10% of the people were obese.  Now, 80% are obese.  That's a 150% increase!

Today, 67% are overweight and of those, 34% are obese where the BMI = 30-34.  17% of children are obese.  $117 billion in direct and indirect costs.  40% increase in doctor visits, medications, and procedures.  1.1 million deaths from cardiovascular disease.  There are > 23 million diabetics.  1.4 million cancer cases for 2007, which was the #1 killer.

80% of your health is determined by stress factors such as poor nutrition, environmental chemicals and negative emotions.  Stress can turn into heart disease, thyroid problems, diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, impaired immune function, increased bone loss, excess weight, and impaired memory.  Negative emotions can deteriorate your health.

There can be 200 cancer toxins in your body.  Research has found over 287 chemicals present in umbilical cords and 217 of them are toxic to the brain.  Of those 208 caused birth defects and 180 cause cancer.

Xeno-Estrogens, which are xenohormone that imitate estrogen can cause breast cancer, endometriosis, weight gain, fibrocystic breast disease, migraine headaches, premenstrual syndrome, ovarian cysts, endometrial cancer, benign prostatic hypertrophy in men, restless leg syndrome, birth defects, and prostate cancer.  An increase in body fat stores more estrogen.  Today, there are 50% less sperm in males since the 1970's.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is the main cause of obesity.  It was introduced in the late 1970's and in the main stream food since the 1980's.  HFCS stops the signal to the brain to stop eating.  You always get signals to feed yourself from cells and the brain.

Standard American diet mainly consists of processed foods, lack of antioxidants, foods causing silent inflammatory reactions, and wrong nutrients.  Caffeine decreases the blood flow to the skin and it increases fat cells.  Caffeine is one of the deadliest chemicals to the body similar to cocaine.  Coffee has a lot of pesticides in it.  Decaf coffee has an ingredient that is similar to dry cleaning.

The anti-nutrients in our diet are hydrogenated oils, HFCS, processed foods, fast foods, candy, sugary drinks, and GMC.

Green tea can be toxic as it contains high levels of fluoride.  You don't know what they mix with green tea.  An average cup of tea contains 8 mg of fluoride (which reduces hypothyroid back in the 1920's).  No chemical causes cancer as fast as fluoride.  On the same note, triclosan is a known carcinogen in toothpaste.

    HFCS:
    - suppresses production of leptin (causes appetite to increase and impairs insulin sensitivity both of which cause weight gain)
    - reduces insulin sensitivity
    - major cause of obesity
    - contributes to diabetes epidemic
    - increases blood triglyceride levels, LDL, and fat deposition

In 1900, .4% had diabetes.  Today, 20% have diabetes.  23 million people have type 2 diabetes which accounts for 95% of all cases.  Environmental toxicity leads to silent inflammation in the body which causes disease like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and obesity.

Causes of weight gain: decreased leptin sensitivity, clogged liver and colon, hormone imbalance, lack of enzymes, nutritional deficiencies, heavy metal toxicity, genetics, yo-yo dieting, xeno-estrogens, lack of sweating, lack of breakfast, pasteurized foods, eating before bed, lack of sleep, processed foods, lack of exercise, trans fats, poor circulation, poor eating habits, and irradiated foods (microwave).

Need to provide our bodies with proper nutrition, hormone balance, and stick with USDA organic as much as possible.  Our bodies don't digest man made products well like supplements.  It needs to be whole food source.  Not all supplements are created equal and many are a total waste of your money.  Progesterone helps digest fat.  If you have thyroid problems, you may have low progesterone.

Young Living has whole food source supplements that can help supplement your dietary needs, check it out:  http://www.youngliving.com/essential-nutrition

    Enzymes

The biggest takeaway from the Young Living Essential Oils (YLEO) 2011 convention for me was enzymes and how important they are to your well-being.  Below are my notes from the convention.

Our bodies create over 3,000 different kinds of enzymes.  We should have millions of enzymes when we are healthy.  When our enzyme reserves start to diminish, we have bi-polar, cold, flu, arthritis, allergies, autism, Parkinson's, inflammation, cancer, digestive problems, heart disease, hormone deficiencies, stroke, headaches, cancer, and autism.

Enzymes are produced by living organisms.  They contain amino acids.  Enzymes are the catalysts that create many essential biochemical reactions.  They facilitate chemical reactions in the body very quickly.  Without enzymes, some metabolic processes would happen very slowly or not at all.  Every daily biochemical function in the body requires enzymes to facilitate the building of compounds from the body's raw materials, transport elements throughout the body, break down substances such as food, and eliminate toxins and chemical waste in the body.  Enzymes deliver nutrients to the body in order to make use of those food elements.  Enzymes need minerals and vitamins to function.  Enzymes free minerals, vitamins, proteins, and hormones to engage in body functions.  Enzymes play a major role in every metabolic process in the body from glandular function and support to hormone productions and toxic waste disposal.

Enzyme production decreases in the absence of live food as well as disease, stress, aging, and petrochemicals.  The inhibitors are aspirin, Tylenol, ibuprofen, antibiotics, cleaning solvents, household cleaners, microwave radiations and heat over 120 degrees.  Headaches are caused by an enzyme deficiency and if you take aspirin or ibuprofen, you are inhibiting enzyme production.  Allergies are a by-product of enzyme deficiency.  Arthritis is not a disease, it is an allergy (quote from Gary Young).  You can't create a hormone without a protein and you can't create a protein without an enzyme.  Enzyme deficiency causes nightmares and restless leg syndrome.  People can be allergic to phenols because of enzyme deficiency and some oils have high phenols.

When you fast, you don't deplete enzymes.  When you eat dead food (microwave), you deplete enzymes, by using the ones in your reserve.  Estrogen helps the skin.  If you are a vegetarian, you may have a lack of estrogen and need to supplement it with lipase.  Enzymes facilitate digestion and assimilation.  Every food has enzymes and carrots are very high in natural enzymes.  Amylase is in breast milk and if you didn't get enough as an infant, you will have allergies.

After digestion is completed, enzymes will break down.  They will pass into the blood stream as amino acids.  They become building blocks in the body.  Protease, amylase, and other enzymes will enter the blood stream to clean out foreign materials such as free radicals and potential allergens, which create gluten intolerance and other allergies.  Enzymes make their way back to the liver and pancreas and are used again.

What can enzymes do for us?
    - Clean clogged arteries of plaque
    - Empty stomach of undigested fat
    - Prevent stroke and heart attack
    - Enzymes eliminate old fat and proteins left deposited from years causing cariovascular problems
    - Protease reduces inflammation processes and enhances circulation and the immune system by improving and increasing the surface area of the red blood cells, allowing it to transport more oxygen
    - Enzymes are effective in weight regulation - overweight people are lacking in lipase
    - Enzymes prevent allergies and degeneration such as: gluten and lactose intolerance, leaky gut, acid reflux, and heart burn, environmental allergens, colds, coughs, flu, degenerative disease
    - Help clear the body of undigested proteins and meat: undigested starches, sugars, and carbs will ferment fats, turning them rancid.  Toxins create a host for disease such as candida, leaky gut, brain fog, fatigue, hypoglycemia, depressions, allergies, and fibromyalgia.
    - You heal faster with enzymes, it facilitates circulation and oxygen
    - Enzymes stimulate the brain, alertness, and memory attention

The FDA has approved enzyme therapies for treating cancer, cardiovascular disease, removal of dead tissue, gastrointestinal conditions, pancreatic conditions, and removal of toxic substances from blood.

What does this all mean for us?  Build up your enzyme reserves if you don't want allergies or cancer.  The enzymes break down the protein shell of cancer cells.  It might take up to 2-3 years to build up the reserves.  Clean the liver and increase the enzymes to help with diseases.  Essential oils have enzymatic activity and when you use essential oils, you are stimulating enzyme production in your body.
